Bluebell Trail, Gobions Wood

Description

Gobions Wood is a fascinating reserve, with an unusual history as part of a landscaped “Pleasure Garden”. The reserve is primarily ancient woodland but includes ponds, hedges and grassland areas. Highlights include stunning carpets of bluebells and wood anemones in spring and a wealth of fungi in autumn, with over 550 species being found here. The surrounding grasslands are full of wildflowers and invertebrates in the summer months. Route goes out and back with a short loop at the far end. Surface varies from soft wood-chip to hard, compacted soil to uneven sections with protruded roots. There a many gradients, often over short distances; the steepest are 1.6 (16.7%). Although much of the woodland has slopes and uneven ground, an alternative approach for some visitors might be to access part of the site to get an atmosphere of the ancient woodland and to view some examples of large and impressive redwood and giant sequoia trees amongst other important tree species and good mix of woodland and waterside bird-life.
