Ilfracombe - Capstone Hill

Description

Capstone Hill is a large outcrop of rock reaching out to sea, which lies between the Landmark Theatre and the harbour in Ilfracombe. Capstone Hill has a circular walk which for the most part is level or has minimal gradients. The walk is at a low level round the base of the hill. There is a section of the walk which has a gradient of 14% (1:7) for about 30m which cannot be avoided unless you walk back the way you came. There are paths going up to the top of the hill which zig-zag their way up. Some of these can be accessed by wheelchair users particularly if they have the powered variety. Some of the paths however are steep. There are lights along the lower route which is referred to as Capstone Parade. There are many seats along the route and some are covered although some need repairing. On the side furthest out to the sea there is a lower level reached by concrete steps and protected by a blue metal handrail, that is used by fishermen, this can be dangerous as the rocks can be very slippery.
